Frequently
Asked Questions
How
much battery life will I get when using my FlashTrax XT?
FlashTrax
XT uses a 4400 mAh Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that
is user-replaceable. While operating time on a single
charge will vary depending upon a number of factors, including
Power Management settings and user applications. Expected
battery life is:
*copying
data from 1GB CF cards:
36-37
GB of data on a single charge
*copying
data from 512MB CF cards:
22-23
GB of data on a single charge
*watching
video:
7-8
hours on a single charge
*listening
to music:
14-15
hours on a single charge
For
demanding applications, these figures can be doubled by
purchasing a spare battery for replacement in the field.
Does FlashTrax XT read RAW format data from digital
still cameras?
FlashTrax
XT can read any RAW format files from flash media and
store them on its hard drive, just like JPEG's. When FlashTrax
XT copies the contents of an inserted flash media card
onto its hard drive using the automatic COPY feature,
it copies the entire contents of the media card, including
all files and subdirectories. Therefore no matter what
format you have used to capture images or other data,
it will be saved to the FlashTrax XT hard drive.
Can
FlashTrax XT display RAW format images on its LCD?
Yes,
FlashTrax XT can display RAW format images from selected
camera models from Canon (.CRW,.CR2), FujiFilm (.RAF),
Minolta (.MRW + .THM), Nikon (.NEF), Olympus (.ORF), Sony
(.SRF), Sigma (.X3F) and Pentax (.PEF). FlashTrax XT displays
RAW files using the JPEG image embedded in most RAW files,
so display time is quite fast. The resolution of the displayed
RAW file (and therefore the extent of zooming possible)
depends on the resolution of the JPEG information stored
in the RAW file by the particular camera manufacturer.
What
voltage range is supported by the A/C adapter?
The
A/C adapter will work with input voltages of 100V to 250V,
50 to 60 Hertz. Therefore it can be used with most international
electrical systems if an appropriate plug adapter is used.
Is
the rechargeable battery interchangeable in the field?
Yes.
You can purchase extra batteries so that you'll always
have a charged battery for quick replacement.
Can
FlashTrax XT erase images off CompactFlash?
Yes,
or it can reformat the CF card if desired. (Note: it is
usually easier to use the camera to erase or reformat
after a transfer to FlashTrax XT, than to use FlashTrax
XT itself.)
Can
FlashTrax XT read flash cards such as Secure Digital,
SmartMedia, MemoryStick, or xD?
FlashTrax
XT directly reads CompactFlash (CF) cards. To read other
types of cards, the SmartDisk FlashTrax XT Media Adapter
(model # CAXX4N1) can be used. The Media Adapter plugs
into the FlashTrax XT CF slot, and looks like a CF card
with a slot to plug in either an SD/MMC, SmartMedia, Memory
Stick or Memory Stick Pro card. Unfortunately, the CAXX4N1
has been discontinued and no longer available.
Does
FlashTrax XT support IBM Microdrives?
Yes.
Microdrives are actually high capacity (1GB and higher)
tiny mechanical drives packed into a CompactFlash case.
They use more power than traditional CompactFlash memory,
so some devices will not work with them. They are not
a problem for FlashTrax XT.
Does
FlashTrax XT work with Apple computers?
Yes.
When connected to an Apple USB port, it appears as a mounted
external hard drive.
How
is the FlashTrax XT hard drive formatted?
FAT32,
for maximum compatibility with both Windows and Mac OS
based PC's.
Can
I store data other than pictures, videos and music on
FlashTrax XT?
Yes,
since FlashTrax XT looks like an external hard drive to
the PC to which it is connected, it can be used just like
any external, portable hard drive. So you could use FlashTrax
XT to back up or transfer documents, spreadsheets, etc.
Is
FlashTrax XT upgradeable?
Yes,
SmartDisk frequently offers free user-installable software
upgrades for FlashTrax XT that add new features and improve
operation. Check the SmartDisk Technical Support section
of our web site for more information.
